A person who has registered a cyber crime complaint in India can track its progress through several official channels provided by the government. The primary and most efficient method to track a cyber complaint is through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal operated by the Ministry of Home Affairs. When a complainant successfully submits a cyber crime report on this portal, the system generates a unique acknowledgment number known as a cyber crime complaint reference number. To check the status, the complainant must visit the official national cyber crime portal, navigate to the check status section, and log in using either the credentials created during registration or by entering the unique complaint reference number along with the registered mobile number, which will then trigger a one-time password for verification. Once authenticated, the dashboard displays the current status of the complaint, such as whether it is pending review, assigned to a local law enforcement agency, under investigation, or closed. In addition to the national portal, complainants can track their cases by directly contacting the local cyber cell or police station where the complaint was forwarded. Cyber crime cells function under the jurisdiction of state police departments. If the complaint involved financial fraud, such as unauthorized UPI transactions, credit card cloning, or net banking thefts, the victim must also check the status of the ticket raised on the dedicated financial fraud helpline portal, which is integrated with the national cyber portal. When a financial fraud complaint is registered promptly on this helpline, automated alerts are sent to the respective banks and intermediary payment aggregators to freeze the fraudulent transactions and put a hold on the funds in the scammer's beneficiary account. Tracking this aspect involves monitoring the ticket updates provided via SMS or checking the portal for updates regarding whether the disputed amount has been successfully frozen or refunded back to the victim's account through the legal chargeback process or court orders. If a formal First Information Report has been registered based on the cyber complaint, tracking the status shifts from the online portal to the judicial and police tracking mechanisms established under the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973 (CrPC). Once an FIR is filed, the investigating officer is legally bound to conduct an investigation and file a police report under Section 173 of the CrPC before the jurisdictional magistrate. The complainant can track this stage by approaching the local police station's investigating officer to obtain updates or by filing an application to inspect the case diary or status of investigation as permitted under the law. Furthermore, many state governments in India have launched citizen portal services and mobile applications where citizens can search for registered FIRs by entering the FIR number, police station details, and year of registration. If the police fail to take action or update the status of the cyber complaint, the aggrieved person has the statutory remedy under Section 154 of the CrPC to send the substance of the information in writing to the Superintendent of Police or Commissioner of Police. If the grievance remains unaddressed, the complainant can approach the jurisdictional judicial magistrate under Section 156(3) of the CrPC to seek a court-monitored direction for registration of the FIR and a thorough investigation by the cyber crime wing. Maintaining a physical or digital copy of the initial complaint acknowledgment, transaction receipts, bank statements, chat logs, and email correspondence is crucial during this tracking process, as law enforcement agencies frequently require additional clarifications or supplementary evidence while processing cyber crime investigations through various stages.

Dear Client, The status of a cyber complaint can be tracked on different platforms including the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal at cybercrime.gov.in, using the acknowledgment or complaint number generated at the time of filing, through the "Check Status" option after logging in with your registered mobile number. You can also call the 1930 helpline and quote the acknowledgment number for an update. In case your complaint leads to registration of an FIR, the FIR in itself may be separately tracked through the citizen portal of the state police on the basis of the FIR number. I hope this answer helps. If you have any further query kindly do not hesitate to contact us. Thank you.
