India is a party to several major international environmental treaties aimed at protecting the environment, biodiversity, climate, wildlife, and natural resources. Some of the key treaties include: United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Aims to address global climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting international cooperation. Paris Agreement Adopted under the UNFCCC. India has committed to nationally determined contributions (NDCs) to reduce emissions intensity and increase the use of clean energy. Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Seeks to conserve biological diversity, promote the sustainable use of its components, and ensure the fair sharing of benefits arising from genetic resources. Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety A supplementary agreement to the CBD that regulates the safe handling, transport, and use of living modified organisms (LMOs). Nagoya Protocol Establishes rules for access to genetic resources and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from their use. Ramsar Convention on Wetlands Promotes the conservation and wise use of wetlands. India has designated numerous wetlands as Ramsar Sites of International Importance. Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) Regulates international trade in endangered animals and plants to ensure that such trade does not threaten their survival. Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) Encourages international cooperation for the conservation of migratory species and their habitats. Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer Provides the framework for international efforts to protect the ozone layer. Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer Requires the phase-out of ozone-depleting substances and is regarded as one of the most successful environmental agreements. Basel Convention Controls the transboundary movement and environmentally sound disposal of hazardous wastes. Rotterdam Convention Promotes shared responsibility in the international trade of certain hazardous chemicals and pesticides. Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) Seeks to eliminate or restrict the production and use of persistent organic pollutants that pose risks to human health and the environment. United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) Focuses on combating desertification, land degradation, and the effects of drought through sustainable land management. India's obligations under these treaties are implemented through various domestic laws and policies, including: Environment (Protection) Act, 1986. Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. Biological Diversity Act, 2002. Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980 (as amended). Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974. Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981. Other environmental rules and regulations issued by the Central and State Governments. By participating in these treaties, India cooperates with other countries to address global environmental challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, ozone depletion, hazardous waste management, and the conservation of wildlife and natural ecosystems.
