If a marriage certificate is lost, the couple should apply for a certified duplicate copy from the authority that originally registered the marriage. The general process is as follows: Contact the Marriage Registrar Visit the office of the Marriage Registrar or Marriage Officer where the marriage was registered. Submit an Application File an application requesting the issuance of a duplicate or certified copy of the marriage certificate. Mention the names of both spouses, the date of marriage, and, if available, the marriage registration number. Provide Supporting Documents Identity proof of one or both spouses. Address proof. Any available proof of the marriage, such as a copy of the lost certificate, wedding photographs, or the registration receipt, if available. Pay the Prescribed Fee Pay the applicable fee for obtaining a certified copy, as prescribed by the State Government or the registering authority. Verification The Marriage Registrar will verify the details from the official marriage register before issuing the duplicate certificate. Collect the Duplicate Certificate Once the application is approved, the certified copy of the marriage certificate will be issued. If the marriage registration number is not available: Provide as much information as possible, such as the names of the spouses, date of marriage, place of marriage, and approximate date of registration, to help locate the record. If the marriage record cannot be traced or the application is wrongly rejected, the couple may approach the competent authority or the appropriate court for suitable relief. It is advisable to keep scanned and photocopies of the marriage certificate in a safe place to make it easier to obtain a replacement if the original is lost.
