Answer By law4u team

Sanctions under international law are restrictive measures imposed by countries or international organizations to influence the behavior of a country, government, organization, or individual that is believed to have violated international law or threatened international peace and security. The primary objectives of sanctions are: To maintain international peace and security. To encourage compliance with international law. To deter unlawful conduct. To pressure governments or individuals to change their actions without using military force. Sanctions may be imposed by: The United Nations Security Council. Individual countries. Regional organizations, such as the European Union. Common types of sanctions include: Economic sanctions, such as restrictions on trade or financial transactions. Asset freezes. Travel bans. Arms embargoes. Restrictions on exports and imports. Financial and banking restrictions. Diplomatic sanctions, such as limiting diplomatic relations. Sanctions may target: Countries. Governments. Political leaders. Terrorist organizations. Companies. Individuals involved in unlawful activities. Violations that may lead to sanctions include: Acts of aggression. Terrorism. Human rights violations. Proliferation of nuclear, chemical, or biological weapons. Financing of terrorism. Serious breaches of international peace and security. United Nations sanctions adopted by the Security Council are binding on UN Member States under the UN Charter. Countries are generally required to implement such sanctions through their domestic laws. Countries may also impose unilateral sanctions based on their own foreign policy and national laws. These sanctions are separate from UN sanctions and may not be recognized or enforced by all countries. In India, sanctions issued by the United Nations are implemented through applicable domestic laws and government notifications. Indian authorities, financial institutions, and regulated entities are required to comply with applicable sanctions and related regulatory directions. Violating applicable sanctions may result in consequences such as: Freezing or confiscation of assets, where permitted by law. Restrictions on financial transactions. Trade restrictions. Regulatory or criminal action under the relevant domestic laws. Sanctions are distinct from criminal punishment. They are primarily international or governmental measures designed to influence conduct, whereas criminal punishment is imposed by a court after legal proceedings under the applicable law.

Answer By Anik

Dear Client, Sanctions are measures imposed by states or international organisations to influence a country's, group's or individual's conduct without necessarily using military force. They may include asset freezes, travel restrictions, trade restrictions, arms embargoes or financial restrictions. UN Security Council sanctions are particularly important because UN member states are generally required to implement binding Security Council measures under the UN Charter.
